Queen Nefertari's Egypt

Exhibition October 16, 2021 − January 16, 2022
Discover the world of Queen Nefertari, the great royal wife of Pharaoh Ramses II. The exhibition, created from the world-famous Museo Egizio in Turin, Italy, immerses visitors in the magnificent palaces and tombs of ancient Egypt, including the burial chamber of Queen Nefertari. Queen Nefertari's Egypt celebrates the role of women - goddesses, queens and commoners - and offers a glimpse into both royal life and the daily lives of artisans through more than 220 works of art.
One of the most famous queens of ancient Egypt, Queen Nefertari was the favourite wife of Ramses II, who called her "the one for whom the sun shines". A colossal temple was built in her honour at Abu Simbel and her tomb in the Valley of the Queens, rediscovered by Italian archaeologist Ernesto Schiaparelli in 1904, is known for its striking craftsmanship. Nefertari's tomb, sometimes called the "Sistine Chapel of Egypt", is the most ornate tomb in the Valley of the Kings, with beautifully painted scenes depicting gods and winged goddesses, animals, insects and hieroglyphics illustrating the complex passage through the underworld to eternal life.
Visitors to the exhibition will see personal objects from the tomb of Nefertari, as well as many objects from the royal and daily life of Egypt during the 19th dynasty of the New Kingdom (1292 - 1189 BC) - magnificent sculptures, intricately painted sarcophagi, jewelry. The exhibition includes majestic sculptures and intricately painted sarcophagi, jewelry and jars for perfumes and cosmetics. On display are fragments of Nefertari's massive pink granite sarcophagus lid, wooden shabti (small figures who could perform manual labor in the afterlife), a beautiful gold and faience amulet in the form of a Jed column (a symbol of stability) and a pair of woven palm-leaf sandals - US women's size 9.
