Petrograd Madonna. Exhibition of one masterpiece from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery

Exhibition November 27, 2021 − January 30, 2022
The Primorye State Picture Gallery and a branch of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Vladivostok present the exhibition Petrograd Madonna. Exhibition of one masterpiece from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery". From November 27, 2021 to January 30, 2022 for the first time one of the key pictures by the prominent Russian painter Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin "1918 in Petrograd", also known as "Petrograd Madonna" will be exhibited in Vladivostok.
The exhibition will be a continuation of the programme to introduce residents of Vladivostok to outstanding works of Russian painting. The Primorsky Art Gallery has already demonstrated I. Levitan's March in 2017 and F. Reshetnikov's Dvoika again in 2019.
The choice of the work "1918 in Petrograd" for display in Vladivostok is connected with the fact that Primorye was the place of the last operations of the Civil War (1917 -1922), and in 2022 there will be a hundred years since those events.
The painting "Petrograd Madonna" reflects one of the key themes in the artist's work - the theme of motherhood. Young worker on the background of the urban landscape shelters the baby from the anxious episodes of life in the context of the Civil War. The scale of the figure and the simplicity of forms of the Madonna of Petrograd refers the viewer to the image of Our Lady. The concrete reality - Petrograd in 1918 - is understood in the context of almost two thousand years of Christian history and shows the inseparable connection between the eternal and the present.
Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was a Russian artist, painter, graphic artist, art theorist and writer. His impressions of the Moscow and Novgorod schools of icon painting, the paintings of the Early Renaissance masters, the works of Matisse and the French Symbolists were of the greatest importance for the formation of the artist's unique style. The main features of the artist's work are the appeal to spiritual and moral problems, the desire for monumentality, and the use of local colour.
The exhibition of one painting is a unique opportunity to touch the work of the most important masters whose works are not represented in the collections of seaside museums. Viewers in museums often navigate between selected masterpieces, missing out on equally important canvases. The format of the exhibition, in which the focus is on one particular one, will allow the viewer to extend a dialogue with the artist and see an entire era through it.
The exhibition will include a series of lectures and master classes by experts of the State Tretyakov Gallery. On December 11 and 12 art historian Maria Tokareva will lecture on the works of Konstantin Petrov-Vodkin and on the history of his painting "1918 in Petrograd. On January, 29 and 30 the art historian Ekaterina Sinitsina and the artist Darya Kotlyarova will conduct master-classes for the youngest visitors 6-9 years old and schoolchildren 9-12 years old. During the master classes, children and parents will see how the image of the Madonna has been transformed in the history of art, fantasize about the journey of paintings, get acquainted with the history of Petrograd in 1917-1920.
