Paintings in pictures

Exhibition March 20 − July 17, 2022
Philadelphia Museum of Art invites you to visit the exhibition "Paintings in Pictures.".

Throughout the ages, artists have created images that incorporate other images into the subject. The works in this exhibition represent a wide range of approaches to this motif, from the expected - embedded paintings, photographs and drawings - to the surprising and intangible - illusions, reflections and shadows.

In some cases, artists use the technique to illustrate the process of creating a work of art and image, such as in examples of self-portraits, mirror reflections, and images of authors at work. In other cases, the images playfully assemble objects, people, and ideas that might not otherwise coexist. In these paintings, artists allow ghosts to manifest in the physical world and ancestral figures to mingle with the living. Or they can make connections between past and present, overlaying and superimposing images to explore memory and history.
