Live in pastel! Pastel paintings from Vivienne to La Tour

Exhibition May 7 − October 23, 2022
Munich's Old Pinakothek holds an exhibition "Live in Pastel! Pastel Paintings from Vivienne to La Tour.".

About three dozen works, including more than 20 pastels, by such masters as Joseph Vivien, Maurice Quentin de Latour, Rosalba Kéréberie and Jean-Etienne Lyotard are on display. For the first time, pastels from the Old Pinakothek are exhibited together with paintings from the State Gallery at the New Schleißheim Castle.

Pastel paintings are often seen in art galleries or castles, in lush decorative frames, behind glass. Their powdery surface makes them seem as sensual as they are precious. How the technique took off, what advantages pastel had over oil painting, whose portraits were painted in pastel - these are the questions the current exhibition is devoted to.
