Short history of Basel. From Erasmus to iris von Roten

The focus of the exhibition "A short history of Basel" location of the world famous artworks and rare treasures of the Museum, presented in a new context. The background for them are outstanding, but often forgotten, private and world-historical significance, and in some cases grotesque and events from the history of Basel.

The exhibition is organised around people, events and objects associated with the city, and humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, the painting "the Dead Christ in the tomb" by Hans Holbein the Younger, Illustrator and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, the historian Jacob Burckhardt, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, Basel peace Congress, 1912, the inventor of LSD albert Hoffman and fighter for women's rights iris von Roten.

Exploring in a new light as a familiar treasure, and the mystery pieces, visitors will discover the history of the collection and its extensive wealth. Crossing the boundaries of individual disciplines, the curators have combined art, science, everyday life and popular culture.
