Public parks, private gardens: Paris - Provence

Exhibition March 12 − July 29, 2018
Metropolitan Museum presents an exhibition «Public parks, private gardens: Paris - Provence».

This exhibition, using the painterly works of nineteenth-century artists, explores horticultural designs that changed the landscape of France and founded innovative movements in an era that gave rise to naturalism, impressionism and modern.

In the nineteenth century, many masters of painting worked in the landscape genre. Parks, gardens served as a resting place and a source of inspiration. Since ships brought exotic botanical specimens from across the ocean, and French nurseries carried out their hybridization and selection, the availability and variety of various plants and flowers grew exponentially, as did the interest in them.

The important role of parks and gardens in the life of France during this period is richly illustrated with paintings, drawings, photographs, engravings, books and decorative objects.

Exhibition «Public parks, private gardens: Paris - Provence» It has about 150 works by more than 70 artists, spanning from the end of the eighteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. The exhibits are taken from the museum’s own collection and are supplemented by a selection of private collection loans.
