Mihai Munkachi

Exhibition April 24 − July 29, 2018
An exhibition opened in the Nicholas Hall of the State Hermitage Museum «Mihai Munkachi»dedicated to the work of the most famous Hungarian artist of the XIX century. The exhibition is organized jointly with Hungarian National Galleryin Budapest and Imre Pak, collector, president of the Mihai Munkachi International Foundation.

The exhibition includes more than 60 works, such a large-scale retrospective of the master will be held in St. Petersburg for the first time.
Among the famous works among the exhibits are two grand canvases from the famous trilogy of the artist dedicated to the suffering and death of Christ - magnificent multi-figure compositions. «Christ before Pilate» (1881) and «Calvary» (1884).

The work of Mihai Munkachi (1844-1900) is extensive and diverse, it combines and harmonizes various directions and genres. However, one of the favorite genres of Mihai Munkachi was a portrait. The artist had the ability to subtly feel the mood of the models, which allowed him to create magnificent images. At the exhibition, visitors will see many beautiful examples of the portrait genre, including «Portrait of Madame Munkachi» (1875), «Portrait of a girl» (1874), Self-portrait II (1881).
