Passion for drawing: Eugene Delacroix from the collection of Karen B. Cohen

Exhibition July 17 − November 12, 2018
Metropolitan Museum presents an exhibition «Passion for drawing: Eugene Delacroix from the collection of Karen B. Cohen».

Known as a master of French romantic painting, Eugene Delacroix (1798–1863) was equally traditional and innovative as a draftsman. Thanks to the excellent selection of exhibits - more than a hundred works on paper - from finished single watercolors to albums, from copies from works by old masters to preparatory drawings for significant projects - this exhibition explores the important role of drawing in the practice of Delacroix.

The exhibition is a great gift to the Metropolitan Museum from Karen B. Cohen, an honorary trustee and a longtime supporter of the Museum. Her famous collection of drawings by Delacroix is one of the best in the world.

The exposition tells how the drawing was involved in the artistic development of Delacroix throughout his creative career, his role in the preparation of engravings, paintings and other decorative works.

This is the first North American exhibit in more than fifty years dedicated to Delacroix drawings.
