Broken column

Painting, 1944, 43×33 cm

Description of the artwork «Broken column»

The pain Frida Kahlo was forced to divide his own body all my life, it seems, displayed in the picture in an absolute degree. In 1944, the health of the artist has deteriorated. Because of the damaged spine (the echoes of the accident that affected the rest of the life and work of Frida) she had over five months to wear a steel corset. It became a real torture, Frida was deprived of the opportunity to move, work and even breathe. But in this state she has found the strength to write.

Picture "The broken column" in stark contrast with most self-portraits Kahlo. It has no flowers in updo nor the riot of vegetation in the background nor beloved artist monkeysand parrots. Only standing naked in the middle of the desert under stormy skies, almost naked, vulnerable and helpless figure is the personification of loneliness and pain, the burden of which had become unbearable for one fragile human. Dark holes in the ground repeat the fault line in the body of Frida where you can see crumbling ionic column. This whole unstable structure holds together only by the corset, which seems woven of light and bandages, rather than assembled from the suffocating metal rims.

Hard to believe, but even to this deeply tragic picture of Frida reacted with its inherent humor. The artist hid a secret message, giving hope: every pupil depicts a tiny white dove, a symbol of peace.

"The broken column" was a source of inspiration for Jean-Paul Gaultier created the costumes for the film "the Fifth element". Outfit of white strips of fabric – the first costume Lila, the heroine Milla Jovovich. In 1998 Gauthier has devoted a whole collection of Frida clothing by combining two images of the artist – Mexican folk westernized and belonging to the New World. In addition, the "Broken column" in 2013, was depicted on a postage stamp côte d'ivoire.
