Bridge Of Europe

Painting, 1876, 125×181 cm

Description of the artwork «Bridge Of Europe»

Bridge of Europe – the most modern place, which you could only find in Paris in 1870. He was only ten years old, in the middle of the bridge is a square to which converge 6 wide new streets. Under the heavy, powerful bridge trains departing from station Saint-Lazareand arriving there. "Bridge Of Europe" is Caillebotte's painting engineer who is willing to impressionistic artistic experiments in the background image, the sun-drenched roads of smoke rising over the bridge, but not willing to sacrifice any powerful, heavy bolt in the precise design of the bridge. Caillebotte admires.

These noisy, crowded, deafening place in the new, reconstructed Paris blur the boundaries between the classes and within each new moment of promise new experiences. Enjoy the roar, the smells and the monumental forms of the new world can all: workers, priests, prostitutes, flaneur, rich and poor, Parisians and provincials. Anyone here not on the road, but nobody interferes with anyone.

Man and woman on the bridge of Europe, we seemed to see accidentally turning on a loud sound or a wisp of a phrase. They are not a couple, between them a second ago something else happened, but now it is not clear what. Some modern critics find here multi-level game of seduction. Rich man, going from the attention of the women (most likely prostitutes), takes almost interested look at the man-worker, who leans on the railing of the bridge. Have never proven suspicion Caillebotte's homosexuality is based often on his life, short novels, with a special interest in men's nature and negligible attention to women.

When the painting was first shown at the Third impressionist exhibition in 1877, it is unlikely that someone came to mind to look for such ambiguous connotations. Controversial and groundbreaking was just the choice of characters on social grounds and themes. Ani Distel, honorary curator of the Orsay Museum and the art historian, says that this painting and a few other Caillebotte begins a new art, which in the literature corresponds to naturalism.

Caillebotte wrote two sketches for the "Bridge of Europe" (one stored in private collection second in the Museum of fine arts in Rennes) and a full picture "Bridge of Europe"(the same bridge design, but at extremely close range, almost engineering drawing). And judging by all these variations, the main hero of the picture for the artist, engineer, gardener, rower Caillebotte was still the bridge. The modern, unpredictable and fascinating place in the new Paris.
