Biography and information
Ilya Efimovich Repin (24 July (5 August), 1844, Chuhuiv, Russian Empire — September 29 1930, Kuokkala, Finland) — greatest Russian realist, has created an epic image of the Russian reality in all its diversity. The theory of "pure art" in some moments it held, but the best works of the artist are far from them, the ideological orientation of pictures played by Ilya Repin was not a disadvantage, but the strongest side.

Features of the artist Ilya Repin: subtle psychology, the relevance, the mapping of social problems and anxieties, involvement in the life and aspirations of society, recourse to the moment of emotional peak of heroes. The main genres in which he worked, the master: portraits, historical scenes and genre painting.

Famous paintings of the artist Ilya Repin: "Barge haulers on the Volga", "Religious procession in Kursk province", "Ivan the terrible kills his son", "Unexpected", "The Cossacks writing letter to Turkish Sultan".

People also considered him a genius and one of the greatest artists. Repin himself called himself a "mediocre figure" and said that talent deprived. He was soft and compliant person and thus easily went into a frenzy. Could acquiesce and simplicity, when it came to him. But as soon decided that someone encroaches on picturesque principles, as was ready to rip to shreds the enemy.

The fiery passion of Ilya Repin

Ilya Repin was 7 years old, when his hand first came the paint. The boy was painted, painted, painted and did not want for a minute to break away from this magic. From overwork he had a nosebleed, bleeding a few days could not stop. Ilya is very weak, the family was ready to the fact that he will not survive. Here’s a dramatic initiation happened in my childhood once called "the pinnacle of Russian realism".

He was excessive in the estimates and passions, too violent disputes, loudly admired other people’s talents and was too unsure of his. At the same time — precise to the canvas. Contemporaries noted his penchant for dramatization in the retelling Repin visit of the milkman has been this phenomenon of an Archangel. And in the letters he abused exclamation marks — now such a number is considered bad manners. He had a gentle nature, he was always courteous, sometimes even excessively, until the dispute came to art — but then… At one of the meetings of the Academy of arts in "run into" Kuindzhialmost flew ink!

Repin originally from Chuguev (Kharkov province). He since the childhood liked to draw, to sculpt. The boy was sent to the teachings of the local icon painter. In the St. Petersburg Academy he wanted to go since I heard about it. And as the fame of a talented young painter spread the time throughout the Ukraine, and from the orders was not, he managed to raise money for a trip to St. Petersburg. There Repin entered the Drawing school society for the encouragement of artists (met Ivan Kramskoywhich in the future will become one of the ideologists of peredvizhnichestva). At the Academy young Repin received a significant click for the vanity drawings he was criticized, he himself sent back home. But to give up so easily he wouldn’t. Soon found a patron willing to pay for the education of the artist in an auditor — estimated the talent of Repin member of the Society of painters Fyodor Pryanishnikov. However, in a short time, Elijah passed the exam and was transferred to the actual students.

He studied eagerly, his tenacity and his talent did not go unnoticed. Silver medal, small gold and large gold, entitling them to a six-year training abroad at the expense of the Academy, are the results of learning. Contrary to expectations, he was in no hurry to take advantage of their prize, first had to finish the painting on which he worked and which made him famous. "Barge haulers on the Volga"demanded training — Ilya Repin could not interrupt the work on the painting and writing it was only in Russia.

It was the first big success, although the critical reviews are also missing. For training in Europe then went with his young wife Vera Shevtsova. Information about the European its period is very disparate. Korney Chukovsky wrote (in the Soviet time, do not forget) that "Repin everywhere I found a boatmen in Russia and Italy, and in Austria". However, while abroad, written by such famous paintings asSadkoand "Black woman"many types of cafes and domestic sketches depicting not a chore.

"Their" Repin was not averse to count and Wanderers, and the "world of art", and academics. Being nutty, he was "given the advances of the" representatives of different directions. Nothing false was not in it, Repin — man is sincere, he fervently admired all that at the moment attracted him, and the next moment could change their views. For this reason, has repeatedly been accused of instability of the position, and even betrayal.

Historical painting, peasant life, exiles — these topics Repin deeply touched and, by and large, they glorified his name, helped by the proximity of Wanderers. Also he was a great portrait painter. Gallery created impressive portraits of subtle psychological insight and consummate skill. To write of a man, he had fascinated them, "fall in love". However, when talking about women’s portraitsthen quotes are not always appropriate in Repin easy and hot.

He was close with Leo Tolstoyoften visited him at Yasnaya Polyana. Among friends Repin, Fyodor Chaliapin, academician Bekhterevthe artist Isaac Brodsky, and many others. When Repin with his second wife moved to the estate "Penates" in Kuokkala, it regularly began to drop Korney Chukovsky. Subsequently, the rules autobiography Chukovsky Repin "Distant relatives" and he wrote about his memories.

More than 10 years Ilya Repin taught at the Academy of fine arts, led a painting workshop. His disciples Boris Kustodiev, Igor Grabar, Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Nicolai Fechin, Philip Malyavin.

After the October revolution, the estate in Kuokkala was in Finland. However, in the USSR Repin disgraced did not, moreover, was declared a classic, and Stalin even sent a delegation to the artist? s return to the Motherland. Old Repin very homesick for Russia, but the return is not resolved. However, the "canonization" of his in the Soviet art were successfully carried out, on the one hand is that Repin not forgotten and for many, his name became almost a household word. Meanwhile, it was a man who passionately loved painting women, was painfully suffering from a lack of self-gift and was ready three sheets to the quarrel with anyone who would encroach on his ideas.

Personal life Ilya Repin

Even when he was a student of Repin Academy of frequent visit to his friend in the drawing school Alexander Shevtsov. It was rumored that he may make a proposal to the eldest daughter of the family, the same age as Sonya. However, the proposal did not arrive, and the activity in relation to the girl Ilya does not show, as if they were waiting for something. He was really looking forward to — when I grow up, stuck him in the soul of a nine year old girl. He wrote to Vera very young, there are a portrait of her sixteen-year-old. In 1872, shortly before graduation from the Academy, Repin married Vera Shevtsova. In marriage they lived for 15 years and gave birth to four children. Korney Chukovsky in his memoirs wrote about the low culture of the first wife Repin like about the cause of the divorce. However, it would be fair to say that a significant role was played by many passions Repin. Temperament he possessed a passionate and in a relationship with women is manifested in full. And since Repin by that time, were people known, women are not shunned. In light of the ever-gossiped about his novels. Vera Repina, wanted a quiet house where you can be closed to outsiders and to deal with family matters. She was exhausted by the constant infidelities of her husband before faded. At first they had separated, dividing the children, and later divorced.

His second marriage also can not be called happy. Natalia Nordman-Severovwas a man of unusual fate. A suffragist, an active social worker, writer and an ardent vegetarian, she was sure that she was destined for great things, managed to find his destiny to go to America, the views held by a very unconventional and, in public terms, was ugly.

Repin wrote Duchess Maria Tenishevs. He always talked with his models, trying to entertain them, used to invite someone to maintain a conversation. It was important to pose for him not miss, do not lose interest. Tenisheva came in for a session with his or her friend or companion Natalia Borisovna Nordman. While Repin wrote that vehemently expounded his views, denounced meat eaters and recited poems. Repin persistently asked the Princess to the next session "this one," she did not. A few months later Repin and Natalia Nordman met again in St. Petersburg, and between them broke out passion. Surrounding surprised. "No skin, no faces, but she seemed to skirt sewn"— an indignant friend of Repin, the critic Stasov. She went to see Repin in his trip to Palestine, and returned, being pregnant. Newborn Natasha lived only two weeks.

Repin bought in the name of Natalia Nordmann a plot of land at the station Kuokkala close to Petersburg, where it was built the estate "Penates". Natalia it settled down, realizing, I think, most of their progressive ideas. Ridicule showered her every which aired in those years edition, got and Repin. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, it appears a kind of enthusiastic and silly airhead who decided to "promote" their name through the famous painter. However, in her letters before us absolutely other person. A subtle sense of suffering and absolutely no sense that in the "Penates" something belongs to it… Ill, she went to Switzerland, where he was admitted to the hospital for the poor. Any financial assistance Repin or his friends flatly refused. In her will "Penates" was overwritten by Ilya Repin, so that after his death there was organized a Museum of his paintings.

"Apostasy" in the paintings of Ilya Repin

The artist Ilya Repin was and other paintings — not one of those that everybody knows. It was not spared of the idea of art for art’s sake, pure art, so popular among his contemporaries. In Soviet criticism of this period, if mentioned, in line with the views of infidelity, "lost my way", etc. With the same vehemence with which he insisted that "…our task is… paint us y — gun, they should Express our thoughts"in 90-e years Repin said: "Yes, we are above all dominated by morality. All subjugated the old virtuous virgin and admits to nothing except the good deeds of journalism".

Here’s the thing — with a clean aesthetic Repin was not as good as "sermons." He has close to impressionistic work (1, 2, 3). But the pinnacle of creativity of Ilya Repin these pictures are not exactly call. Neither one created at the time work he was not satisfied, and he recognized that form should not be more important than content. Quickly he moved away from this direction. But what is surprising is the last painting by the artist Ilya Repin, the remaining underwritten "Hopak"— obviously drawn to impressionism and even Fauvism…
