Kyosai: The Israel Goldman Collection

Mostra 19 marzo − 19 giugno 2022
The Royal Academy of Arts, London holds an exhibition "Kyosai: The Israel Goldman Collection".

For the first time in thirty years, visitors will experience the works of one of Japan's most prominent 19th-century artists. Based on the world's finest collection of Kyosai's works, the exhibition includes paintings, woodcuts and illustrated books, as well as improvised paintings (sekiga ) created at noisy calligraphy and drawing parties (shogakai ).

Known for his talent, eccentricity, and independent spirit, Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) is one of Japan's most distinguished masters of painting. Witty, energetic, and creative... His art continues to influence many contemporary art styles, from manga to tattoo art. Kösai, who has been overlooked for decades, especially in comparison to his earlier counterparts, Hokusai and Hiroshige, has now become famous for his ability to bridge popular culture and traditional art.
