Mast-tree grove

Painting, 1898, 165×252 cm

Description of the artwork «Mast-tree grove»

Picture "Ship grove" considered the artistic Testament of Ivan Shishkin. He wrote it in the year of his death, and this is the last serious work of the artist. In the work on this painting Shishkin used plein air studies, sketches and drafts, created in his native Yelabuga (see one of them).

We see the beloved object Shishkin – powerful, everlasting forest. Ship pine is a magnificent tree, reaching 40 meters in height. Their age is about a hundred years, they are elastic, light and durable wood is used for masts of ships. These strong, stable trees portrayed in his "Testament" Shishkin. Color, traditionally for him, quiet and reserved.

The tops of the trees cut, which creates the feeling of infinite height. At least the canvas doesn't fit! With the inherent Shishkin care discharged every branch and blade of grass, on the bark of trees visible scales. His landscapes spoke with admiration, that it is possible to study the structure of plants, however, often it's he was blamed.

The painting was shown at the XXVI traveling exhibition and graciously accepted. It is impossible not to realize that the era of the Wanderers had left, it was the turn of bright paint Russian pleneristov, mysterious images of the symbolists, the foreground color, flickering of light and air, came a new painting, bright, bright. The landscape has become a very popular genre, but the landscapes of Shishkin stood alone. The difference from those who came after him in the first place, the epic monumentality, grandeur. So who's really "catches the moment" and captures the eternity. Abandoning contemporary bold experiments with light and color, Shishkin at the same masterfully plays with light and shade, and here's the result – sunlight pours from his paintings, the sunlight playing on the trees, the sun-drenched clearing in the foreground beckons, and the shadow of the impenetrable forest, a thickening in the depths of the painting, promises a cool and mesmerizing.
