On August 3rd, two overall category winners of The World Illustration Awards 2017 have been announced at a prestigious ceremony at Somerset House. It is an Italian illustrator Marco Palena as a New Talent and a Dutch artist Aart-Jan Venema in Professional Illustration category. This year it was the Association of Illustrators and Directory of Illustration who announced the 40th World Illustrations Awards. With over 2,300 entries from 64 countries for this year’s World Illustration Awards, the exhibition showcased 50 shortlisted projects across the eight categories, from advertising and design to books and editorial.

The project 'Blooming Bookshops' was made by the illustrator Marco Palena from Pescara, Italy. He studied Art at high school and Architecture at university. He has obtained recognition in several illustration competitions. The work is done with pencil being finished in Photoshop. The artist worked on impulse and completed this project without pausing during a week, in order to celebrate the return of spring on March 21st. Every year, all the bookshops joining the project are invited to set up a special shop window with flowers and books from different publishers to celebrate the arrival of spring. New Talent Category Winner.
Professional Category Winner, a Dutch artist Aart-Jan Venema illustrated 10 areas at the "Green Man Festival". He lives and works in the Hague, the Netherlands. He likes adventures, exploration, books and producing a growing portfolio of digital and handmade illustration. He sketched in pencil, but the final images are all done with a wacom in Photoshop.

"Alice in Wonderland" is the artwork by Rosalba Cafforio from Italy, an artist specialized in fashion and beauty illustration.
Self-Initiated New Talent Category Winner
French artist Marguerite Carnec was born in Paris, grew up in Dublin before completing a BA in Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts in London. Inspired by social injustice and the human condition, she records what she witnesses through drawing. Sometimes shocking and grotesque, often haunting and moving, her work is always personal, expressive, and honest.

Editorial New Talent Category Winner
Books Professional Category is represented by Nina Chakrabartin's works for the book "Hello Nature". She uses line drawing to explore her love of the decorative arts, inspired by her past in Calcutta, India, where she grew up. She studied illustration at The Royal College of Art, London.
"Bus Station" by Steven Choi. An emerging illustrator was born and raised in Hong Kong, he has engaged in art and illustration through self-study since he was a teenager. Not having formal education in the arts, he bypassed in the competition many illustrators in the professional category.
Self-Initiated Professional Category Winner
Jonny Glover is an illustrator and animator from London. Jonny’s style is singular and instantly recognisable. His idiosyncratic characters and sense of humour allow him to open up complex subjects with a light-hearted touch. Glover presented the mural, which was commissioned by the NHS (East London Foundation Trust) for the Mental Health Centre in Newham.
Site Specific Professional Category Winner
- Sam Ki, an architectural/spatial designer with his project "Yen Town - The Last Unpolluted Territory". A series of drawings capturing the tranquil atmosphere and architectural space of a fictional island where purity is defined as the currency of a future resilience city. - Tobatron is a London based illustrator best known for his humorous and ironic use of information graphics. He create a portrait of Barbara Lisicki who has spent her life campaigning for the rights of disabled people through the use of direct action. Research Professional Category Winner
An illustration for her own book called "Seon-AH" was created by a professional illustrator, Inhye Moon from Seoul, Korea. The story, which took five months to complete, is about a woman wearing a safety helmet to feel tranquility while living in an unstable society.
Apple Pencil Campaign by Claudine O’Sullivan. Based in London, Irish illustrator Claudine O’Sullivan’s distinctive drawing style has appealed to established brands such as MTV, WeTransfer, Tiger Beer and Derwent Pencils. The works are created on a professional tablet.
The work entitled "Bill Murray Portrait" (Mark Twain Prize) of digital illustrator Tony Rodriguez infuses flat colour with bold lines to convey a sense of spontaneity and simplicity. Although the art is created digitally, it has the look of traditional pen and ink gestural and expressionistic drawing. Some of Tony’s clients include The New Yorker and Rolling Stone Magazine. The work was made on a quick two day turn-around.
An illustrator and artist Lizzy Stewart from London, who teaches at Goldsmith’s University, presented bright illustrations fro children’s picture book "There's a Tiger in the Garden".

Chen Winner is a graphic artist and filmmaker based in Jaffa, Israel. Project Title is 'CNN: Econundrum', a series of animated shorts dealing with ecological conundrums, this time the consequences of drinking bottled water in particular.
Research New Talent Category Winner
Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations.Little Red is a children’s picture book, adapted from the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale with her own text and illustrations.
