Description of the artwork «Dance in the city»

Impressionism originated in France in the late nineteenth century, replaced the academicism which dominated the visual arts for over two centuries. French painters were looking for new ways to transfer as many objects as emotions that these objects evoke. One of the brightest representatives of this trend is Pierre Auguste Renoir.

His work was so vivid and impressive that the contemporaries of the artist, initially treated to impressionism with some irony and disdain, completely changed my opinion. Wealthy Parisians eagerly purchased his paintings, finding in them a special charm, and did not skimp on the orders. One of the customers of the painter was Paul Durand-Ruel, a famous collector and patron of the Impressionists. Thanks to him, appeared "Dance in the city"the picture painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, which are admired by the connoisseurs of the art of painting.

Durand-Ruel, well versed in the art, was able to see the potential in the nascent period of impressionism. He strongly supported artists and innovators, helping them with exhibitions and many interesting and profitable orders. In 1883, the patron ordered the Renoir three paintings on one subject — a couple's dance. The artist enthusiastically set to work: all three tracks were written during the year. There is a rough sketch, dated 1880, depicting a dancing couple — this suggests that this idea came from the painter long before the proposal of Durand-Ruel.

Description of paintings by Auguste Renoir "Dance in town"

Some critics called this painting "winter" painting, and paintings-dance at Bougival and the village, respectively "spring" and "summer". And really, if you look closely to the background you can see some indications that at certain times of the year. The situation depicted in the painting by Auguste Renoir "Dance in town", tells us that the action takes place in a hall with decorative plants either in the greenhouse.

Picture of Auguste Renoir's "Dance in the city", two other paintings from this series — "a dance in the country" and "Dance at Bougival" — has a vertical format. All the canvas depicts a couple dancing a slow dance. The resemblance of the characters of these three paintings suggests that the artist was to show dancers in a variety of settings and to demonstrate to the audience how, together with the environment and costumes of the main characters changing their mood.

Before us — an elegant couple dancing ballroom dance. The woman turned back to the viewer, wearing a fancy white dress with a long train. The back and shoulders ladies open, in her arms — long gloves of white satin. Head dancing stopped in half-turn: we can see her pretty profile with a delicate nose, full lips and dreamy eyes covered. Women hair collected into a fancy hairdo decorated with a white flower. The man bent towards his partner. almost hidden behind the figure of the lady — it is only possible to distinguish between the tails of his coat, the tip is polished to Shine shoes and white gloves. Background for a dancing couple, Renoir chose a light marble wall that ends with a round column and goes into the dark green wall of plants.

It is known that the model of Pierre-Auguste Renoir was Suzanne Valadon — it painted the picture "Dance in the city". Who posed for the male figure, we can only guess, because his face is not seen. Guess it could be a friend of the painter Paul a Lot.

In 1978 the painting of Auguste Renoir "Dance in town" became part of the collections of the Louvre. Since 1986 this work is in the musée d'orsay (Paris,France).
