Description of the artwork «The meeting of St. Anthony and St. Paul of Thebes»

"The meeting of St. Anthony and St. Paul" (1430-1442) is one of the surviving paintings predella: as you know, in these works, illustrating the lives of the saints, kanjiroushi, framing the main image, the artist could be expressive even within a strict Canon.

"The meeting of St. Anthony and St. Paul" was created in the tradition of medieval book illustration – the entire story is told as if speaking a modern language in a single sketch without storyboards. A series of successive events located along the diagonals left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Fans Sassetti repeatedly noted the mesmerising innocence and purity of tone, chosen by the artist for the wonderful story about the meeting of the Holy elders. Noteworthy is the figure of the centaur – this personification of the animal connection and human nature. Centaur – part of the canonical story: according to legend, the centaur pointed out SV. Antony of Egypt, the journey through the desert to the ne. Paul The Hermit. Except that here the artist replaces the desert, dark forest, a thicket. The latter really influenced by Northern neighbors - the Dutch, the Germans. Such a replacement of desert thicket is characteristic rather for the German tradition.
