Sean Scully. The Shape of Ideas

Exhibition 6 March − 31 July 2022

Philadelphia Museum of Art presents exhibition "Sean Scully. The Shape of Ideas.".

The exhibit introduces viewers to the poetic sensibility and technical virtuosity of one of the leading abstractionist artists of our time. Sean Scully's fascinating paintings and works on paper, presented as part of an extensive fifty-year retrospective, explore his signature stripes and reflect the artist's bold experiments with scale and composition. From the chamber-like, intimate to the spectacular, monumental, the works on display evoke the spirit and reveal Scully's relentless devotion to the expressive power of painting.

Sean Scully's work combines formal reduction with referential complexity, geometric construction with vivid self-expression. Since the 1980s, Scully has developed his own unique pictorial language, built on a subtle synthesis of apparently contradictory qualities.
