Description of the artwork «A girl, illuminated by the sun. Portrait Of M. Ya. Simonovich»

In the summer of 1888 Valentin Serov visited Domotkanovo – the estate of his friends and relatives of Vladimir Derviz (the one married to my cousin Serov Hope Simonovic). He was 23 years old. He recently returned from Italy, was full of impressions and energy. Serov was thirsty "I am happy" - love, joy, simple solar stories. One day, while walking in the Park, he put his other cousin Maria Simonovich - on the bench under the oak. And, admiring the way the intricate play on the girl's face the sun's rays sifted through the foliage, ran for the canvas.

Traditionally leisurely Serov worked even slower than usual. Domotkanovo was one of his favourite places on the planet, and whether his will, he would forever remain in that carefree Sunny day.

The portrait he wrote for three months, taking breaks only in cloudy weather. Maria, who studied at the sculptor was familiar with the profession, and did not complain. "The sessions happened in the morning and after lunch she recalled later. – On the whole day, I posed this famous artist, as we then believed, though not yet recognized in society, but long-recognized in our family... We worked avidly, both equally carried away, he is a good Scripture, I the importance of his purpose".

In the end, Masha Simonovic made important contributions: stated that in her opinion, the portrait is finished, and preparing for the Petersburg. Perhaps if not for her strong-willed decision, Serov "dry up" the picture. And lost its magical game of light and shadow, which made him a worthy heir to such as "sun-worshippers", as Aivazovskyand Kuindzhiand gave reason to talk about Serowe, how about the artist who invented his own impressionism.

In gratitude for your patience Valentin Serov my sister gave 3 rubles to the road. For both of them – young and not yet become on feet – it was a serious amount.

Half a century later, in Paris Maria Simonovich-Lviv and her husband visited a friend Russian engineer. Noticing on the wall a reproduction of "Girl in the sunlight", he asked whose portrait is this. And said that the heroine of the picture was his first love, that every day he went to the Tretyakov gallery to see it.

Serov himself was considered a "Girl" one of the most important of their successes. According to the memoirs of Igor Grabar, shortly before the death of Valentin stared at his painting in the Tretyakov gallery, and then waved his hand and said as if to himself: "She wrote this thing, and then life, not puffed up, nothing came out, then all washed up"*.

*"Girl with peaches"Serov wrote to "Girls, illuminated by the sun" when he was 22 years old. And cousin Maria Simonovich (in marriage Lviv), he would depict again and again - one of her portraitsnow kept in the Museum d'orsay.
