Description of the artwork «Ghosts»

The idea of the picture appeared to the artist in 1902, under the impression of autumn days spent in the old estate Zubrilovka. However, a reliable reproduction of architectural ensembles never attracted the artist, and his romantic noble estates were just as much imagination as the characters who inhabited them. In the painter's colorful symphonies, the complex spiritual reality found expression that was woven from the finest lyrical experiences, elusive emotional nuances. The atmosphere of silent sadness reigns in the "Ghosts", in late twilight female figures swim in the parterre park. Vague visions are so unsteady that they can melt at any moment, not excluding the manor house. The edge between the half-half-half-face and the painter did not want to draw himself: strange white figures on the stairs also speak of the magical duality of the scene. The mood of the “silver age” of Russian culture found its full, love-soulful reflection in the works of Borisov-Musatov. (Album "Russian artists from A to Z", 2000)
