Description of the artwork «Hut»

Landscape with peasant huts painted by the artist during his stay in Drenthe. Here, van Gogh moved on the advice of Anton Mauve, his older friend and mentor. The simple life of peasants were attracted by the novice painter so much so that, shortly after moving, his speech, character and habits began to change in accordance with the way of life of the villagers. On van Gogh's paintings of that period depict the farm of the peasant houses and people at work.

In the province of Drent Vincent was short-lived, just a few months. Here, in almost untouched areas, it was particularly struck by the architecture: the dark hut, covered with moss, fascinated the artist. The landscape, bleak and inhospitable, dreary plains, windswept, is fully consistent with the mood of van Gogh. During this period he is particularly acutely aware of his loneliness and the hostility of the surrounding world.

Van Gogh Painting "The Hut"written in Drenthe, reminiscent of the classic works of the Dutch school. As for other works of the painter created in a "farm period", it is characterized by a dark flavor: earthy, greenish, grey-brown shades. Here in the Netherlands, among the bleak Moors, heaths and muddy roads it was impossible to come to impressionism — the direction in which Vincent worked in the later periods of his creative life. In letters to his brother Theo, the artist often said that it is impossible to understand the nature of impressionism, while in this place.

Depicted in the painting van Gogh's "Hut" houses were intended as housing for the workers who mined in the Drenthe peat. After the mining was stopped, construction of temporary shelters turned into permanent. Despite the bleak landscape and muted dark shades, the artist managed to convey the atmosphere of peace and quiet this far from large urban places. A cloudless bright sky, silhouettes of houses and the lack of people in the painting "the Hut" create a feeling of loneliness, but at the time of writing the paintings the feeling was pleasant van Gogh. He worked almost continuously, leaving the house early in the morning and returning by night.

Despite the increased interest in the life of the peasants in Drenthe, van Gogh could not find a common language with the locals. The works of this period are practically no images of the villagers: the artist has not been found among them models willing to pose for him. Later, after moving to Nuenen, a town of Brabant, where van Gogh's father received the parish, the artist has painted a series of portraits of local residents. With great love Vincent depicted people at work, on vacation, at home. Here they continued "peasant" period of his work, which began in Drenthe.
