The portrait was painted in 1867. A year before this picture Edouard Manet was rejected by the jury of the Salon, and Emile Zola lost his job for the positive feedback on his work. In the Salon of 1867, Manet chose not to exhibit, but participated in it as the hero of portrait of Henri Fantin-Latour.

The painting depicts Manet, who is going for a walk or just got back, his hand clenching the cane, at the head of the cylinder, the posture expresses the willingness to move. The background of the canvas, make the color of his costume: gray, white and blue, expressive of themselves, they emphasize the elegance of the outfit.
