Description of the artwork «Ice mountains in Antarctica»

Aivazovsky wrote "Ice mountain" for Theodosia archaeological Museum (by the way, built at his own expense), where the picture for a long time and stored. 1870 – the year of the creation "Ice mountains" and the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by a Russian expedition led by Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.

Admiral Lazarev Aivazovsky became friends in the academic years, during a trip to the Caucasus Rajewski. Painting in the footsteps of his stories. The artist so far not climb. Aivazovsky the blame is often put lack of geographic authenticity, saying that in Naples salient features of the Crimea, the Bosphorus sometimes like Venice, etc. Surprisingly, in this case Antarctica, which he never saw, similar to Antarctica. For comparison: the artist of the expedition Bellingshausen Pavel Mikhailov.

Ice mountains reach about one hundred meters in height breaking through the clouds beams paint water in a deep emerald color. Central ice shines, illuminated by a ray of the setting sun, dressed like a medieval castle. Coloring the picture of understated (by the standards of Aivazovsky), with subtle tints of purple shining in the background right, until translucent ice in the foreground. The water color ranges from light transparent green to black in the back of the canvas. Under a huge block of ice is the ship raised the Russian flag, similar to ships of the expedition "Vostok" and "Mirny". This leaves no doubt that the picture of the "Ice mountain" – not a fantasy Aivazovsky on the free theme, and its response to the global geographical discovery: the discovery of the sixth continent, committed by a Russian expedition in 1820.

Three years before writing this piece, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the artist at the meeting in St. Petersburg Academy of arts was made Vice-Chairman of the Russian Geographical society Semenov-Tian-Shansky, noting that Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky long been recognized as the outstanding geographical figure.
