Description of the artwork «Baroness von Krudener son Field»

"Portrait of Baroness von Krudener son Field" performed by Angelica Kauffman in 1786, the year, perhaps, would not have received such notoriety, if not for the woman it depicts.

Who was Barbara Julia von Krudener?

To offer a modern viewer to stretch the imagination and to describe, who was the Baroness von Krudener based only on the given this portrait by Angelica Kauffman, the viewer could hardly tell too much. It would surely have been noted that we face comely and graceful, curly-haired Golden-haired lady in a white dress in the Empire style. Perhaps someone herself portrayed, and the overall poetic structure of the painting would remind Maria Lopukhina written just eleven years later, the portrait Borovikovsky (and the artist combines the style of sentimentalism). But hardly an inexperienced viewer would see depicted on canvas the woman something special. Meanwhile, Barbara Julia von Krudener is one of the most odious and at the same time, mysterious figures in Russian history. Suffice it to say that some historians believe: the Emperor Alexander I proposed the idea of sacred Union of the three Christian empires (Russia, Austria and Prussia) under the direct influence of the Baroness von Krudener and those long conversations, a mystical-religious content that they were.

In 1882, the year 18-year-old Julia Barbara Fitingof, descendant of the glorious Russian field Marshal Munnich, married the diplomat von Krudener. He was a lot older and in the cycle of the European balls couldn't keep funny and witty husband from cheating. The Baroness had gone through many novels. One of them she wrote the epistolary sentimental novel "Valerie" (in French), which was immediately translated into several languages and introduced in Europe fashion dress up and write letters "as Valerie". De Linar, the protagonist of the book Krudener, even mentioned in Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin" – this is about him tat "reads the delightful novel"; and Vladimir Nabokov argued that the Tatyana's letter to Onegin – nothing like a rehash of free text background Krudener.

After 40 Baroness is undergoing some "treatment", betrayed a religious exaltation, declared himself dukhovidtsa and a prophetess, Napoleon the Antichrist, and Alexander – bearer; around it is going a considerable congregation of those who hears her, including even the European monarchs, although the Orthodox Church saw in her vision and mysticism only "evil faith lehrstucke". Ruined his health by ascetic experiments died, Barbara Julia von Krudener in 1824, the year in the Crimea.

Artistic originality of the portrait of the Baroness von Krudener brushes Angelica Kauffman

Sweet mother with a young son, is likened to the God Cupid, – the plot is quite typical of neo-classicism, in line with the as Kaufman. However, the picture in the background secluded corner of the Park, elegiac dreamy mood, the soft modelling of forms and smooth lines – all this says about the refusal of the artist from an expressive-figurative means of Neoclassicism in favor of sentimentalism, a considerable tribute which his work gave not only Michelangelo, but also the Baroness von Krudener.
