Description of the artwork «Red gladioli»

In 1916-1919 years Chaim Soutine creates a whole series of flower still lifes, special place among which is occupied red gladioli (1, 2, 3).

Do not be fooled by the genre "floral still life" – tenderness and romanticism in these pictures we can find. No utopias and pastoral! Illusion roses-dreams is not for him. Think Soutine to the pain in the eyes looks at the surrounding reality, and paint it screaming, incessantly, about the horror in which results of the artist's confrontation with it – even when it comes to bouquet of flowers or two childrenthat holding hands, walking on the road.

These flashy colors on my eyes. Flower paintings by Soutine is not something on which will rest the tired eye, they present the field of battle. In this sense, the gladiolus was chosen not accidentally, the etymology of the word goes back to Latin gladius sword.


In a series of "gladioli" for the first time in a leading role goes red – king color palette Soutine. We meet with many shades of red – purple, crimson, scarlet, bloody, fiery. His red – always intense, blinding. Unlike the fauves, who also paid close attention to color, Soutine color is not decorative, it is always the key to feelings, and these feelings never calm.

"Expression is contained in the smear"– said Soutine. "Red gladiolus" from the Paris Notre Dame Cathedral is especially remarkable in this sense. Smear – dense, thick, very noticeable, distinct. The Soutine is referred to the expressionist, although he is not "part" of the expressionists. It generally in any society and community is not included, but close to Modiglianipretty baffling the audience who could not understand that there is a refined, polished the famous expressionist and this strange, ragged, nervous little Jew. Soutine worked in three genres: still life, landscape, portrait. In none of them did not differ. He was not interested in what the shape of the leaves and flowers of gladioli, the only thing that matters is passion red with fever and the feeling of the battle that occurs when you look at these flowers. By the way, he repeatedly said that if you weren't an artist, he would become a boxer. Fight on his canvases, he just moved. Someone from contemporaries commented on "flowers" Soutine: they seem to "claws, rudely rending the air".
