Description of the artwork «Suicide»

The drawing is made for the selection Committee of the VI world festival of youth and students in Moscow, 1957. I was told Rabin, the works in the Exhibition could represent not only the members of Moscow Union of artists, but also "unregistered" artists. "The suicide" was the third attempt of the artist to show the Commission the "social" subjects on the theme of "life under capitalism". He described this "epic" memoir, "Three lives" in the Chapter "long live the festival!". "I was looking for, what would it be like. Decided to beat the "social" plot. Painted "unemployed"... shown in another picture, the hooker was standing, leaning on a lamp, and defiantly Smoking a cigarette. Prostitutes ...I had never seen and thought that cigarette Smoking is a defining characteristic of their profession. The fact that these stories are drawn from Western life, was implied by itself, because who among us does not know that neither prostitutes nor unemployed in the country of the Soviets there. ...Between the members of the third exhibition Committee once again sparked fierce debate about my works... that evening, after returning home, I wiped and "Unemployed" and "Prostitute" [Rabin, Kropiwnicki, Rabin. The Pushkin Museum. 2007. P. 24].
