Description of the artwork «Letter»

"The letter" one of ten color prints Cassatt dedicated to the life of the modern woman. This series, the artist presented his first solo exhibition in the gallery Paul Durand-Ruel in 1891. Simple and at the same time delicate work made in the techniques of "dry needle" and "aquatint", captivated the Parisian public. Stingy on compliments Camille Pissarro call them technically perfect and amazing in color. A leading scholar of the artist Adeline Briskin believes printmaking is the most significant contribution Cassatt in the history of world art.

Prints prints "Letter" are now kept in several museums.
Cassatt became interested in graphics during a trip to Italy in 1871. She took lessons from Carlo Raimondi, head of the printmaking Department of the Academy of Parma painting. But then learning it did not matter. Eight years later Degas suggested Cassatt create a series of illustrations for the magazine "night and Day". The artist worked in the Studio of mentor, where was the printing press and other tools neobhodimee to create etchings. In the magazine, these illustrations did not work: Degas suddenly broke the agreement, and the project was closed. Created by the time of the work of Cassatt presented at the fifth impressionist exhibition in 1880. The prints she returned only after 10 years.

"Letter" illustrates one of the most important occupations of educated and wealthy women of the late nineteenth century. Ladies used writing not only to communicate with family and friends. Economics and social communication (orders, responses, etc.). also was tied to correspondence.

We see a young woman sitting at the table and seals just written a letter. It feels restrained beauty and dignity. The woman's eyes Express determination and despair at the same time. Most likely, this letter was given to her hard.

As with other works of the series ("In omnibus", "The woman is washing itself"), "The letter" inspired by Japanese graphic art, particularly woodcuts Utagawa Hiroshige. Cassatt plosila space and distorted perspective to bring the viewer to the image. The elements of the composition are balanced by using color (variegated dress and Wallpapers vs solid surface of a table, paper and envelope). Facial features and black hair issue woman Asian. But the environment of the room is typical for France, the time of Cassatt. Folding table, depicted on the engraving belonged to the artist.

"Letter" is not only a compositional orderly and harmonious colour schemes. Cassatt showed his talent as a draftsman and knowledge of the line, which is so admired it Degas.

Engraving, albeit indirectly, tells about the situation of contemporaries Cassatt, who lived in a world of numerous social taboos. The artist herself suffered from unfair restrictions. In the "Letter" Cassatt gave her a familiar feeling of aching sadness.
