In 1951-1954 he studied at the Leningrad art College (now named. V. A. Serov). Since 1971, lives and works in Perm. Collaborated with the publishing houses of the cities of Irkutsk, Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Minsk, and many foreign publishers; illustrated and designed works of Russian, Belarusian and West-European classics. Special and main page of the artist – the work on the design and illustrations of children's books. Designed the textbooks on natural history and native language, primers – Belarus (Minsk, 1973, gold medal at the competition of primers in Leipzig, 1977), Komi-Permyak, and others In the 1980 illustrated "the Fabulous alphabet" (reprinted in 1989). In 1980 has finished the work on "Tales" by A. S. Pushkin (published in the design Kovalev in 16 European languages.). In 1981, 1989-2004. prepared and illustrated "Tales" by Hans Christian Andersen. In 1992 illustrated the tale of p. P. Yershov "the humpbacked Horse". "Russian folk tales" in the illustrations Kovalev was reprinted many times. In 2005 tales from his illustrations came out five million copies in China. Topics developed Kovalev in the illustrations, are reflected in the easel of the artist: "Forest ABC", "Evening conversations (ABC-town)" (both 1975); "the Hustle wonders (towers on the snag)" (1973), "Tree watch" (1975), "healthy pantry" (1979). In 2000-2005, wrote 22 of the portrait-paintings of Russian and foreign writers (A. S. Pushkin, I. A. Krylov, H.-K. Andersen, Charles Perrault, D. Rodari, A. N. Tolstoy, Verne, Alexandre Dumas etc.) for literary-artistic complex Regional children's library. L. I. Kuzmina. Participated in Intern. book fairs in Moscow (1977, 1979, 1981, 2000, 2002, 2004 years), Bulgaria (1968), Germany (1971, 1977, 1982); all-Union, Republican, zonal, regional, provincial art exhibitions. Personal exhibitions of works were in the city of Perm and Perm. .(1985, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 gg.). The winner of the award in the field of art and culture Perm. . (1995). Works are in the collection of Perm. state art gallery, in art museums of Perm. region, the Urals, Siberia, and in private collections in Russia and abroad.
