Ivan Pavlovich Kotovschikov (1905, p.) is a native resident of Tyumen. Having received the first professional skills in the Studio, he continued his education first in the Urals art-industrial College, and later at the painting Department of the Omsk art school. M. Vrubel. Graduating in 1930, the artist returns to his hometown, where he spent his childhood and youth. For several years he worked as a painter-decorator in the city Chamber Opera and operetta, and later - the chief artist of Sarapul drama theatre. He tries his hand in almost all genres of theatre art: drama, Opera, operetta. Sketches of those years attest to the undeniable beautiful craftsmanship and sense of style of the young artist. Although Kotovschikov uses different ways to solve the stage space, it is the painting that he always plays the dominant role. The most interesting and original solution found by the artist in the production of the operetta "the Geisha" by the English composer C. Johnson. In sketches, he managed to convey the flavor of the spicy exotic East through the use of bright parts in the national setting (the background-landscape of Japan with views of the sacred Fuji mountain is framed by stylized figures of dragons and colored lanterns). Other means of theatrical expression drawn Kotovschikov when staging plays by Soviet dramatists. Convention space, the use of various machines and structures, appeal to the symbolism and allegories can be found in a number of sketches. But always surround stage installation artist always enriches the theatrical painting. Giving the theatre a lot of time and effort, Kotovschikov primarily remained a landscape painter. For many decades he lovingly writes of his native city. And now, surpassing his eightieth birthday, he remained creatively active, interesting and original artist. This is evidenced by one of the last and best of his paintings - "Winter day" which was exhibited at the jubilee exhibition, dedicated to the 400th anniversary of Tyumen.
