Biography and information

(1894, Kiev – 1961, Moscow)

Painter, graphic designer, muralist. One of the leading representatives of the Ukrainian, Russian and Jewish avant-garde of the first third of the twentieth century. Honored art worker of the RSFSR (1936).

Interest in painting borrowed from his father, making their living by writing signs. He studied at the Kiev art school (1906 – 1912), Studio of A. A. Murashko (1912 – 1915),

finally, in the Studio A. Exter (1917 – 1918). In 1918 he founded (jointly with Exeter) workshop of decorative art, where students were B. S. Aronson, A. Tyshler, N.. Shifrin, S. K. Vishnevetskaya, etc. In 1919, issued (jointly with Tyshlera) statement K. A. Mardanova "Fuente Ovejuna" ("Sheep source"), by Lope de VEGA.

Since 1920, started its work in Moscow. Designed productions at the Moscow art Theater, the Bolshoi and Maly theatres, the Jewish Chamber theatre (1925 – GOSET), Musical theatre. Nemirovich-Danchenko. Created scenery for movies Ya protozanov (Aelita: jointly with V. A. of Sims and S. V. Kozlovsky, costume designer Alexandra Exter, 1924; "Process about three millions", 1926). From 1926 he taught in VHUTEINe.

In 1939 – 1948 designed the stained glass Windows and interiors of the Palace of the Soviets, in 1947, fulfilled the mosaic "Glory of the Soviet Army" at the metro station "Baumanskaya".

Since 1955 Rabinovich – the main artist of the theater. Vakhtangov. The work of Rabinovich characterized by bright entertainment and metaphor, transforming the stage space into one of the main means of theatrical expression.

His works are in the Tretyakov gallery, Pushkin Museum im. A. S. Pushkin, Central theater Museum im. A. A. Bakhrushin in Moscow, the Theater Museum in St. Petersburg (part of the former collection of N. D. Lobanov-Rostovsky), in many other meetings.
