Painter, graphic artist, member of Union of artists since 1950, honorary citizen of the city of Rossosh (1983). The participant of the great Patriotic war. In 1945 took part in an art exhibition in Fergana, which presented works created during the war.
Studied in Rossoshanskiy teachers College (1930-32). Artist-engraver in the newspaper "dawn of communism" (1934-35, the city of Rossosh), the art of the Voronezh House of the red Army (1937-41, 1946-50). In absentia studied at the Central House of national creativity to them. N. To. Krupskaya in Moscow, where he received advice from the I. E. Grabar and E. A. Katsman (1936-39), studied at Voronezh city art Studio under the guidance of the student of I. E. Repin, A. A. Buchkuri and A. P. Vasiliev (1937-40). The artist has devoted his paintings to poets, musicians and other figures of the region, he was particularly interested in topics related to the life of poets A. Koltsov and I. Nikitin. For the painting "V. V. Dokuchaev in the Kamennaya steppe," by G. A. Goncharov in 1950 was admitted to the Union of artists of the USSR.
G. A. Goncharov worked primarily in the genres of thematic painting local history, military and Patriotic subjects, as well as portrait and industrial landscape. Major works: "Tank attack" (1940), "gifts to the soldiers" (1947), "by V. V. Dokuchaev in Kamennaya steppe" (1951), "A. V. Koltsov in the don steppes" (1953), "native land" (1954), "Donskie prostory" (1978), "M. E. Pyatnitsky among the peasants" (1981). The author of numerous graphic works, executed in the technique of pencil drawing, watercolor, and gouache.

In 1983 about 50 of his works the artist donated to an art gallery of the city of Rossosh of the Voronezh region. All in all, the city of Rossosh, he donated more than a hundred paintings. The whole hall was taken to the local Museum the paintings of the artist-countryman.

From 12 September to 13 October 2013 in the exhibition hall of the Voronezh regional art Museum held a personal exhibition dedicated to 100th anniversary of his birth.
