(17. 9.1873, kroměříž, — 10.2.1962, Prague), Czech graphic artist and painter, people's artist of Czechoslovakia (1945). He studied at the Prague Academy of arts (1891-98). Acted as a painter-Illustrator, the author of the stained glass Windows and paintings, but special popularity was gained as a draftsman (drawing with pencil, pen, charcoal) and engraver (lithographs, etchings, engravings, dry point, mezzotint, wood engraving, etc.). Was influenced by symbolism, but in General has maintained a commitment to life-affirming, imbued with romantic pathos. For creativity sh the characteristic of a composition depicting lush, blooming nature, populated by real or fabulous, allegorical characters ("Hunting tigers", 1914, "Harvest", 1927; both drypoint), emotional landscapes and portraits (great graphic series of portraits of Czechoslovak culture: Th. Of manes, 1917, woodcut, Yu drypoint, 1950, etc.). Worked as an Illustrator (the works of Victor Hugo, 1944, S. P. Schipacheva, 1955, etc.). State prize of Czechoslovakia (1952).
