Born in Riga. During the First world war he studied at the Penza art school, where he met Alexandra Beļcova. Sasha is originally from Ukraine, Chernigov province, lost his parents early. Her mother is a priest's daughter, and her father was a Belorussian peasant, has received a title of nobility for special services. In 1917 Alexandra and Roman settled in Petrograd. She worked in the Studio of the famous avant-garde artist, Nathan Altman. And it mobilized the regiment of Latvian Riflemen, where he stayed for only two weeks... but he was at home. Two years later, A. beļcova travelled to the Novel in Riga: thought — for a while, hoping as soon as possible to see Paris, but it turned out forever... they Married in 1922. the best man at the wedding was Rainis. Tatiana Suta, daughter of the famous couple, ballerina, art historian and TV presenter, who retired in 2004 — during his lifetime called his apartment Museum. She invited people interested in art, during classes with students of the Academy of arts. Tatiana treasured heritage of parents and in her will gave all of their work (and 4500) and the preserved stuff in the gift of the Art Museum with the condition that there will be a memorial apartment. It was done.

In 1919 the artist involved in the creation of a group of expressionists, later the group of Riga artists, was an active member (until 1926). In 1929, 34 years of R. Suta was a member of the society Riga graphs. Also since 1926 uchastvoval in exhibitions of the group “Zaļā vārna”.

In exhibitions he participated since 1919.

His work has been exhibited in many exhibitions of applied arts and easel painting.

Personal exhibitions are organized in Berlin (1923, 1925, 1928), Tallinn and Tartu (1923), Warsaw (1924), Paris (1925, 1937), Stockholm (1927), Riga (1928, together with A. Beļcova), new York and Prague (1930), Washington (1930), Oslo (1933), Leningrad and Moscow (1934), Brussels (1935), Leipzig (1939).

R. Suta founded a workshop of porcelain painting "Baltars" (1924 – 29, together with A. Beļcova and S. Vidbergs). He was the chief artist of the glass factory in Ilguciems (early 1930s – 1940).

Artist led painting Studio in Riga folk high school (1929 – 34) and his private Studio (1934 – 40). He was a designer in Riga film Studio (1939 – 40).

After 1940 we were evacuated to Tbilisi, where he continued work as a decorator of films until 1944, when on the basis of slander was razstrelen (in 1959 rehabilitated).

In the former residence of the artist (Riga, street, Elizabetes 57 – 26) to be the memorial apartment of R. Suta and A. Beļcova.
