Faces, figures and objects are often depicted as flat rectangles or triangles, there is an asymmetry, implausibility. The palette is subdued, brown and dark blue tones prevail, the rules of perspective and chiaroscuro are not taken into account. All objects on the canvas seem to be composed of geometric shapes. In portraits, face images are often shown in profile and face at the same time. Sometimes, in search of new means of expression, the artists addressed to collage: they glued pieces of newspapers, fabrics and other bright textured materials onto their canvases. Later, this technique was picked up by the Dadaists and the representatives of Pop Art.
In painting, three phases of cubism can be distinguished: Cézannesque, analytical and synthetic. Each subsequent phase had less realism and more geometry.
Picasso became the most expensive, demanded and efficient cubist artist. His painting "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" is estimated at 155 million US dollars. Cubist paintings are the number one among the art thieves. The volume of the official sales of cubist works exceeds 270 million.
