The portrait was painted in 1867. A year before this picture Edouard Manet was rejected by the jury of the Salon, and Emile Zola lost his job for the positive feedback on his work. In the Salon of 1867, Manet chose not to exhibit, but participated in it as the hero of portrait of Henri Fantin-Latour.

The painting depicts Manet, who is going for a walk or just got back, his hand clenching the cane, at the head of the cylinder, the posture expresses the willingness to move. The background of the canvas, make the color of his costume: gray, white and blue, expressive of themselves, they emphasize the elegance of the outfit. These shades the artist used a specially know about love Manet to artists of the Spanish school. The colors in the painting are similar to those used Velasquezand Goya in their works.

Marcel Proust said about Manet: "His eyes are open, to catch every nuance of modern lifeand". The artist Fantin-Latour managed to convey this very special look of a man who was ahead of his time, but that time was famous as the controversial Creator.
