Biography and information

Russian painter, graphic artist, theatrical artist with a keen sense of decorative colors, romanticheski expression, craving for Oriental exoticism and the fantastic. Hails from an Armenian family in Tiflis. Studied in Moscow. Was close to artists of "Blue Rose", N. Sapunova, S. Sudeikina. He was a member of the "Union of Russian artists". Fond of French simultaneism and Italian futurism, but native to the founder of modern dance was the art of the East. Was particularly attracted to his colorful style of Persian miniatures.

Yakulov in 1918-1919 he taught at the VKhUTEMAS. In 1920-1921 ingeniously designed productions of A. Tairov in Moscow in 1927, by S. Diaghilev in Paris (see "Russian Ballet Seasons in Paris". In recent years, worked in Yerevan.

G. B. Yakulov was born in Tiflis in the family of a lawyer. After his father's death the family Akulovich in 1893 he moved to Moscow. Six years of the future artist spent in the walls of the Lazarev Institute of Oriental languages, and in 1901 he entered the Moscow school of painting, but two years later was expelled and was soon drafted into the army. Served in the Caucasus, participated in the Russo-Japanese war.

Upon returning from Manchuria to the exhibition of the Moscow Association of artists in 1906 Yakulov showed his film "Jump". It was a success. In this and other works Yakulov, characterized by a rich flavor, reflected the rhythms of modernity, revived the life of city streets and cafes. In 1906-07 years the artist has developed his own theory of light and the origin of styles in art, called "Theory colorful sun". Familiarity Yakulov in 1913 with R. and S. Delaunay in Paris showed that his quest was in line with the pursuit of modern European artists.

In the 1910s, the artist turned to art. He designed the balls and recitals, cabaret interiors and art exhibitions. Together with V. E. Meyerhold created Yakulov cafe pittoresque in Moscow - "constructive music hall," as it was called by its contemporaries; was decorated with the Moscow poets cafe "Pegasus Stall". By this time, the beginning of his friendship with S. A. Yesenin and poets imagist.

In 1918 the talent Yakulov decorator fully revealed on the stage. He became an artist of the Moscow Chamber theatre, performed with it, their best performances: "Princess Bram-bill" E.-T.-A. Hoffmann and "Girofle-Girofla" sh Lecoq. Wild imagination Yakulov, good use of the experience of constructivism has made it one of the most prominent theatrical figures of those years. In the early 20-ies he led a workshop of theatrical-decorative painting VKhUTEMAS. Do not leave Yakulov and their painting to 1920, applies written "Portrait of A. G. Koonen".

Held in 1925 in Paris, the world art and industrial exhibition for the design of the performance "Zhirofle-Girofla" sh Lecoq at the Chamber theater and for the design of the monument to the 26 Baku Commissars, developed in collaboration with the architect Vladimir Shuko in 1923, Yakulov received an Honorary diploma. Then SP Diaghilev invited the artist to draw the ballet "Steel gallop" to the music of Prokofiev. This statement was made in 1927, the artist was the author of the libretto. The ballet was a success in Paris, London and Rome. In these years Yakulov continued to work for the theaters of Moscow, Erivan and Tiflis.

He died in the Prime of creative forces in Moscow. In 1967, almost forty years after his death, in Paris on the initiative of Armenian artists and spouses Delaunay was organized by the "Society of friends of the City of Yak-fishing" which aims to return the artist's works are caught up abroad.
