From 1855 to 57 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of arts. Then he studied in Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc. In 1859, he continued his studies at the School of fine Arts in Karlsruhe under L. des Coudre. Beginning in 1860, was a private pupil of V. Sohna. 1873-1912 taught at the Düsseldorf Academy of arts. Since 1875 Professor. In Estonia preserved altar painting "Christ on the cross" (1866) in Tallinn Doomsday of the Church, portraits of "Pleading", "portrait of a man", etc.

Exhibition: Tallinn, Berlin, Brussels, Dresden.
