Description of the artwork «The Surrender Of Breda»

Mimogrede, "Predaja Brede" je znana tudi pod alternativnim naslovom The Spears, v skrajni desni strani Špancev (z brki, ponosnim videzom in klobukom s perjanico) pa so mnogi raziskovalci videli umetnikovo lastnost -portret.Ne opažamo nobenega soočenja ogorčenih tekmecev in to ni videti kot sramotna predaja mesta, ampak morda kot podpis mirovnega pakta. Oba poveljnika sta polna dostojanstva: Velasquez z Bredinimi tipkami ravna skorajda kot srečanje starih prijateljev. Samo skupine častnikov na obeh straneh kažejo, da obstajajo zmagovalci in poraženci. Zmagovalna španska vojska je na levi. Španske sulice gledajo v nebo: njihova gostota kaže število Špancev, dejstvo, da so kopja skoraj vzporedna, pa zaznamuje njihovo briljantno vojaško disciplino. Nizozemci na levi pa so zmedeni. Toda Španec Velasquez se zelo previdno sklicuje na samopodobo nasprotnikov: ne kaže jih niti zlomljenih niti ponižanih. Niti Justin iz Nassaua niti Ambrosio Spinola (ki ga je Velasquez na kratko poznal) nista mogla ceniti veličastne Velazquezove umetnosti: v času nastanka slike (približno 1635) sta bila dva že mrtva. Toda ta slika jih je zajela v zgodovino. Zdaj si lahko vsi, ki obiščejo dvorane madridskega Prada, ogledajo eno najbolj objektivnih zgodovinskih slik doslej. Tu nobena stran ni prikazana bolj upravičeno ali manj plemenita od druge in zmagovalec in poraženec dokazujeta medsebojno spoštovanje brez primere med sovražniki.
