Description of the artwork «Ballet restroom. Snowflakes (Ballet The Nutcracker)»

"Snowflakes" one of the written Serebryakova at the Mariinsky theatre paintings "from the life ballet restroom". To his Paris trip in 1905 Zinaida Serebryakova was charmed ballerinas Degas. Her own ballet series can be considered a dialogue with the renowned painter. Key difference: ballerina Degas impersonal, they are a feeling, a manifestation of dance in the female body; ballerina Serebryakova is not abstract, it's real girlsor girls with different personalities, having in view the intended audience, a little Karetnikau in front of him.

The picture "Snowflakes" the girl on the left slyly glances in the direction of the viewer. And, by the way, seems to hi the artist herself from former happy times: the same slightly slanted eyes, arched eyebrows, a coy mischievous smile. This dancer is similar to the artist in his youth (1, 2).

Sensuality have Serebryakova – a special blend of innocence and of predstatelnoy. So perceived all these curves, random nakedness, tying shoes on elegant stems. It is time to remember Pushkin's beauties "and their legs" (Pushkin Serebryakova loved). This amazing alloy women's and children's, a fusion of sensuality and innocence characteristic of her Nudes, including the famous "The bather".

It is noteworthy that none of the ballet works or sketches, no scenes of the performance itself. The artist is interested in the process of preparation and anticipation, owning girls in the dressing room, some waiting for a miracle. In this Serebryakova similar to Degas, who also wrote of the dancers during the performance. But the mood of the paintings are quite different, Serebryakova it is much brighter and happier (although the artist's life at this time was not full of joys). The ballet's atmosphere it is the atmosphere of celebration, ease, amusement, inspiration, flight, and shy coquetry.
