Aleksandr Gerbertovich Rappaport (October 23, 1941, Vologda) - Russian architect, architectural theorist, architectural critic, art historian. Doctor of Arts, member of the Union of Architects of Russia (since 1968), the International Committee of Architectural Critics (International Committee of Architectural critics, CICA) (since 1985), the Association of Art Critics (since 2002), the Union of Designers of Russia (since 2003).

The son of film director Herbert Rappaport and film artist L.P. Shieldknecht. In 1959-1965 studied at the Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineering (LISI); in 1964 - the drawing class of V.I. Shukhaev (Tbilisi); in 1967-1970 - In graduate school NIITAGa. Until 1977, he participated in the Moscow Methodological Circle under the direction of GP Shchedrovitsky [1]. In 1976 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of architecture on the topic "Formation of theoretical concepts in modern architectural design." In 2002 - his doctoral thesis for the degree of Doctor of Art History on the theme "To the understanding of the architectural form" [2].

He worked as an architect in LenNIIP urban planning (1965-1969); Head the Laboratory of Sociological Research of the Moscow Research and Design Institute of Cultural, Leisure, Sports and Health Care Objects (MIIPOKOZ) (1972-1977); Head Sector of the Institute of Culture MK RSFSR (1977), Moscow; Senior Researcher at the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (1978–1984); Head the department NIITAG (1984-1991); Journalist for the BBC World Service (1991-2001), London. Currently, he is a leading researcher at the Department of Theory of Architecture at NIITAG. In 2012-2014 he taught at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Graduate School of Business, Arts and Technology RISEBA (Riga).

Author of thousands of publications on architecture, architectural and town planning methodology and design, theory of architecture and design, fine arts, animated films and photography in different countries (Russia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Georgia, Ukraine, Estonia, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, United States). As Rappaport himself admits, every day he writes at least two texts, so a thousand or more publications are made in a year [3].

Since 2004 he has been living in Mazirbe (Latvia).

He maintains a philosophical and methodological blog "Tower and Labyrinth" [4] and a page on the social network Facebook.
