Zaven Arshakuni the original artist bright talent, always recognizable, energetic and at the same time internally focused. His creative range is diverse: paintings, drawings (drawing with pastels and colored pencil, engraving on linoleum, etching, lithography, book, applique, layout), decorative arts (carved and painted furniture, stained glass). He painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes. The period of creative development of the artist is concentrated on the 1960s and coincides with the so-called "thaw". It was the time of the return from oblivion of the artistic heritage 1910-1920's. Again it was possible to see exhibitions of works of Malevich, N. Goncharova, Marc Chagall. The heritage of the classical avant-garde formed creative credo Arshakuni. But this is not imitation and emotional rethinking. First of all, it is felt in the beautiful system works. The color of his works colourfully-intensive based on the unexpected contrasts. High decorative works fills the shape with color, plastic generalization. Drawing free and expressive. Work 60-ies of the romantic, excited, sometimes dramatic. Such, for example, the painting "Carnival" (1968-1969, were not kept) or "feast of the victory on the Neva river" (1969).
In the 1970s, dramatic tension all the more deeply into the subtext. Before us scenes of dumb dialogue, comparison polar started ("Conversation", 1976), different temperaments ("Friend",1979). They, like sad memories, sometimes with a tinge of tragedy ("Death to the Commissars", 1979). Often the artist is drawn to modern everyday life, but in these works there is no prosaicness. The emotional element in them is self-improvement, meditation, listening to casually walking time, waiting ("Conversation", 1978; "In the Studio", 1980). Sometimes prosaic motives and scenes of the artist thanks to an amazingly beautiful painting turn into genuine poetry. ("Green window" 1969; "the Summer garden", 1985).
From 1962 Arshakuni — member of the artists Union of the USSR. He is one of the active participants of the group "Eleven" (exhibitions in 1972 and 1976 PA Okhta, Leningrad, and along with G. P. by Egoshina and V. I. Tuleevym, members of this group, in the Central House of artists in Moscow, 1982), and "26" -together with the Muscovites and Leningraders — the Central exhibition hall in Leningrad (1990). Arshakuni party of about 200 exhibitions in this country and abroad. Among them personal: Dresden, the Kunstmuseum (graphics), 1980; Leningrad, Union of artists, 1981; Vologda Art gallery, 1982; Novosibirsk 1984; Kostroma, Museum of Art, 1988; Moscow, Exhibition hall of the magazine "Our heritage", 1997. The artist owns the design of several theatrical performances and sketches of monumental murals and stained glass. His works are in state Tretyakov gallery, state Russian Museum, Pushkin Museum im. A. S. Pushkin and other museums around the country and also in foreign collections (a total of 35 museums of the CIS countries and far abroad), including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Museum P. Ludwig, Cologne; Kunstmuseum, Dresden, etc.
