Avner Katz. I was already

Exposición 4 de marzo − 2 de octubre 2021
Israel Museum, Jerusalem invites you to visit the exhibition "Avner Katz. I've already been.".

At the heart of the unusual exhibit is a series of daily self-portraits that Katz created over the course of a year as he approached his 80th birthday. They are sober assessments in which he scrutinized himself, old age and the transience of life. Each portrait contributes to an epic creation, a new pinnacle in his artistic journey. Avner Katz died a year and a half after completing the series, which is now a visual chronicle of a life lived and a death predicted.

In these highly personal paintings, drawings and illustrations, Katz, a superbly soulful storyteller, offers humorous and ironic statements and wise contrasts of word and image. Avner Katz's work (1939-2020) rested firmly on three pillars: illustration, painting and writing. And each supported the other, adding a remarkable variety of the author's works. The exhibition features self-portraits containing text and image. Together they enrich our understanding of the man and his extraordinary art: the writer who painted pictures and the artist who wrote metaphors.
