Crucifixion. Exhibition of a single icon as part of the "Holy Countenances" series

Exposición 23 de noviembre − 19 de diciembre 2021
Starting November 23, as part of the "Holy Countenances" exhibition series The Primorsky Art Gallery presents the icon "Crucifixion" from the stock collection.
The life-giving Cross belongs to the main Christian relics, therefore the Crucifixion (the image of the dead Christ on the Cross, symbolizing the sacrifice for the redemption of sins of all people) has always been given special importance. In the spiritual culture of Russia after the Nikon reforms for the zealots of ancient piety it was crucial to preserve the traditional form in the image of the Crucifixion - the eight-pointed cross (i.e. the cross on which besides the large crossbeam with nailed hands of Christ, there is also the upper and lower bars. The upper one is identified with the tablet, about which the Gospel says: "Then Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" (John 19:19-22)). In the vast majority of cases, the inscription on the crosses is replaced by the abbreviation INCI or INRI (in Latin). Another bar, the lower one (called the "measure of righteousness") was intended for Jesus' feet: one side of this bar is raised up and points towards the repentant prudent thief executed with Christ, the other is respectively directed downwards and points to the unrepentant criminal.
On the icon from the collection of the Primorsky State Picture Gallery in the upper part of the Crucifixion (above the mourning angels) is an image of the Saviour Not Made with Hands (The Face of Christ on a light cloth). On a large crossbar to the sides of the arms of Jesus Christ the author has placed the sun and the moon with corresponding inscriptions (the depiction of the luminaries means the day shift at night "From the sixth hour darkness was everywhere on the earth until the ninth hour"). At the bottom of the crucifixion there is a cave with a skull and bones. According to Christian teaching, Adam's remains were in the place where Christ was crucified and a drop of divine blood, falling on the ground, washed his bones and Adam got the opportunity to return to heaven. A splendid fabric frame with rhinestones and glass beads and a wooden box were made for the crucifix from the collection of the Primorsky Art Gallery in Central Russia in the 19th century together with paintings that testify reverence for the relic.
The icon is displayed in the Hall of Old Russian Art of the Main Enfilades as part of the permanent exhibition "Russian Art. From Icon to Avant-garde"
