Bryce Marden. Inner Space

Basel Museum of Art holds a major exhibition "Bryce Marden. Inner Space.".

The exhibition features 104 works by the author on paper and 8 paintings from the collection of the museum, national and international lenders. The exhibition allows us to trace the artist's creative development from the 1970s to the present day. Among other things, the exhibition features important series of drawings and paintings from the artist's collection, some of which are on display for the first time.

Marden established himself in the 1960s with monochrome paintings and emotional drawings. In his work he combines two principled positions of the modern painting tradition: on the one hand, the gestures typical of abstract expressionism, and on the other hand, a focus on the essential and objective, which at least outwardly brings his work closer to the art of minimalism.

A parallel selection of American prints, including works by Barnett Newman, Jasper Johns, Sam Francis, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Saul Levitt, and Bryce Marden, many rarely exhibited and some new to the museum's collection, are on display in the rooms. For these and many other artists of abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism, or conceptual art, prints played a special role in their work.
