Images of the prophet Elijah have been known since the early Christian period. In ancient Russia, his veneration was closely connected with folk beliefs - the saint was addressed with a prayer for the cessation of drought and the granting of rain. The images on numerous monuments of personal piety, stone and copper-cast icons, crosses and reliquaries, iconography and temple paintings testify to the wide cult of St. Elijah.
The centerpiece of the exhibition dedicated to his iconography and veneration will be a unique work of the late 17th century with 48 stamps of the life of the saint. This rare iconographic image from the collection of Igor Alexandrovich Sysoletin will be presented to the audience for the first time. It contains the most detailed illustrated cycle of the saint's hagiography, which includes subjects not found in other monuments.
The curator of the exhibition is G.A. Nazarova, Candidate of Art History, Senior Researcher of the Research and Stock Department of the Andrei Rublev Museum.
