Descripción del cuadro «For a beautiful evening»

In the 1940s, art dealer and agent for Magritte was collector Alexander Iolas, who owned galleries in New York, Paris, Milan and Geneva. In addition to Magritte, he promoted artists such as Max Ernst, Andy Warhol, Yves Klein and Nicky de Saint Phalle, and was known not only for his magnetic charm but also for his unmistakable flair for masterpieces. It was for an exhibition organized by Iolas in 1964 that Magritte painted the gouache "Towards a Beautiful Evening," which completed the "Perspectives" series.

In creating Perspectives, Magritte played with the viewer's perception and used images that "transformed" life into death. The series includes variations on well-known masterpieces such as manet's "Balcony", "Madame Recamier" by Gerard и "Madame Recamier" by Davidas well as stand-alone works, such as, "Beautiful Heretic." and "To a Beautiful Evening." The latter work is interesting because, unlike all the previous ones, it depicts two coffins slightly turned toward each other. This suggests the act of talking and gives them a more animated character, thus intertwining the concepts of being and non-being even more strongly.

The gouache "Toward a Beautiful Evening" was first exhibited at the Alexandre Jolas Gallery in Paris the year it was painted.
