A disciple of the brothers G. and N. Chernetsov, often called "the fathers of Russian landscape". In 1840, he was bought out of serfdom and had the opportunity to train in the Academy of arts. In 1838, together with their teachers made a half year journey along the Volga from Rybinsk to Astrakhan. Artists have painted all the most beautiful views of the Volga shores. Later, up to 1846, Ivan as well as chernetsovs paint on the Volga impressions, recorded in sketches and studies. The river sealed Ivanov in the landscape "On the Volga" (1845) as a worker, however, the picture is not alien to the romantic beginning. The artist behind teachers committed to the direct image of nature, the transmission of light and air, the real lighting that was new in the Russian landscape.
