Stas Basarab was born in Ukraine, Zhitomir region on June 23, 1960. After finishing eight-year school he entered the machine-building technical school, after graduating from which in 1979 he was assigned as a young specialist to Leningrad, where he began to work at a machine-building plant. From 1980 to 1983 he served in the Pacific Fleet. After the service he returned to his former place of work. In 1984, while working at the plant, he entered evening drawing classes at the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad, where he graduated in 1988. His teacher was Alexander Davidovich Alkhovsky and F.F. Melnikov. He is engaged in oil painting, mainly in the genre of urban landscape, graphics in mixed technique, design and illustration of miniature editions of works of Russian classical literature. St. Petersburg landscapes Stas Basarab wrote since 1984. The artist undoubtedly belongs to the painting school, which is called "St. Petersburg". This is evidenced by his coloristic solutions and his predilection for depicting "non-parade" neighborhoods. And the video with his monologue about St. Petersburg is called "My Friend the City": "Actually, all my activity in the sphere of artistry was self-indulgence. Somewhere in my consciousness there was a hope of the necessity of this hard work, but, I think, it was an illusion, with which it is necessary to decisively part. If you look at all my works... there is a clear interest in places that are not ceremonial, but backyards, courtyards, nooks, quiet streets, often without people or with a lone figure. In this ... I almost unconsciously expressed my position as an artist in the world, as if I were saying that the backyards of the world are my rightful place". Periodically exhibited in the reading room of the library of the Polytechnic University, in the library of A. A. Blok, in the Museum of A. A. Akhmatova, at the joint exhibition of St. Petersburg artists in the Central Exhibition Hall "Manezh". In 1990 - 1991 studied at the preparatory courses at the V. Mukhina Institute. He studied drawing with D.A. Shuvalov, painting with S.D. Korovina and composition with O.L. Nekrasova-Karateeva. From 1991 to 1996 he was a free artist, often worked on the streets of the city, but the need forced him to look for earnings and from 1996 to this time he combines the work of a security guard and an artist. After a serious illness Stas Basarab passed away in August 2017.
