He was born on 22 October (November 1), 1891 in the town of Palekh. Honored art worker of the RSFSR (1956). Member of the Union of artists of the RSFSR in 1934. Hereditary icon painter. In the years 1902-1906 he studied at the educational workshops of the Committee of guardianship of Russian iconography. In 1906-1917, he worked in icon painting workshop of his uncle, A. E. Odintsova in St. Petersburg and studied painting in evening courses. In 1918 he volunteered for the Red Army. Returned to Ankara in 1922. Was christiansteven, he went to the neighboring villages for a piece of bread drawing pencil portraits. In 1925 was passed in the Artel of ancient painting. From 1928 he taught at the vocational school, then in the Palekh art school. One of the leading masters of the older generation. Died 8 Jun 1960, buried in Palekh.

The Work Of D. N. Butorin has a wide circle of fabulous historical and contemporary themes. Being an excellent draughtsman, he paid much attention to the ornamental completion of a thumbnail. Worked monumental (restored exterior frescoes of the assumption Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin (1947)) and theatrical decorational painting, was painting porcelain, book illustration (book design by A. Nikitin "Journey beyond three seas", together with B. M. Nemtinov (1958)). Themes of works: folklore, literature, history, genre scenes, Great Patriotic war, battle, hunting, three. Participated in exhibitions since 1928.
