Born in Antwerp, died in Tiflis. Pupil of the Antwerp Academy, he finished his education in Paris, where he returned to the country in 1798, and in 1805 moved to St. Petersburg. Here he performed the colossal groups for the decoration of the new Exchange, many monuments, including of count Zavadovsky, and the project of the pediment (65 ft. long and 15 wide) to Military school. In 1809 he was elevated to the rank of an academician for the statue "the River in the form of Neptune."
