Born on October 7, 1924 in the village of Myronivka, Novo-Georgievsk district (Svitlovodsk district), Kirovohrad region. Father Petrov Semyon Ivanovich, mother — Petrova Lucia M., wife — Petrova Nina (1926-1995) was a sculptor.

Since 1932 he lived in the city raisin of the Kharkov area. In 1939 he entered the Kharkov art College. In October 1941 together with all the students of the school were directed to the outskirts of the city of Kharkiv to perform defensive lines.

In November 1941 it mobilized as the youth of premilitary age and evacuated in the city of Stalingrad. From December 1941 to August 1942 he worked at the Stalingrad factory "Red October". In August — September 1942 — gunner Stalingrad fighter working battalion. From October 1942 to March 1943 — the gunner medium tank 31 tank regiment. From March 1943 to December 1945 treated and work in an evacuation hospital No. 1848.

In January 1946 on the basis of the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR demobilized and sent to the city of Tula. In September 1946 he continued his studies in the 4th year of the Kharkov art College. In 1948, at the end of the Kharkov school, he entered the Kiev state art Institute(nowadays national Academy of fine arts and architecture), graduating in July 1954, in the workshop of historical and battle-painting of Professor K. D. trohimenko, disciple N. S. Samokish. In 1954, as one of the best graduates have been directed by the Ministry of culture of the Ukrainian SSR to teach in the Crimean art College im. N. S. Samokish. Since 1961, the Union of artists of the USSR.

Honored artist of the Ukrainian SSR, battle-painter, author of numerous dioramas in museums of Ukraine, as well as other works in various genres of painting, easel and book graphics.

From 1932 the adolescent years Ivan Petrov passed in Izyum, Kharkiv region, the birthplace of the famous Ukrainian landscape painter Sergei Ivanovich Vasilkovsky, a friend and co-student in the Academy of fine arts N. Samokish. The works of both artists had a substantial impact on the choice of life young men, and largely on the formation of artistic thinking of the future battle scenes.

In 1939, I. Petrov entered the Kharkov art College. However, the Great Patriotic war of 1941-1945 has made adjustments to his biography.

Ivan S. Petrov worked in the historic and battle genre in painting and drawing (his works have about 30 books). All his work was influenced by the Great Patriotic war, a direct participant which Ivan Petrov had become in the early years. The artist has created more than a dozen large-scale battle dioramas and a wealth of historic paintings that are in museums of Ukraine. In the works of Petrov, referring to the historic and battle genre, found its expression in the military exploits of many famous military and political figures - Prince Vladimir, count of Christopher A. Minich, Alexander Suvorov, Mikhail Vasilyevich Frunze. Participated in numerous domestic and foreign exhibitions, conducted extensive military patronage and advocacy efforts aimed at fostering interest in the history of the state, awareness of personal influence on the course of history. Ivan Petrov was awarded in 1983 the title of Honored artist of the Ukrainian SSR. The artist's work now on display at exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad, and occupy a worthy place in the collections of museums.
